Abstract:

Cytovirin is an oral preparation derived from a natural lysate purified blue –green algae strain. Many studies showed it's nutritional value, the immunemodulation and antiviral activities . recent reaches proved that cytovirin oral liquid is an effective remedy for chronic hepatitis C. The present study was designed to explore the toxicological and safety properties of cytovirin oral liquid. The acute toxicity studies (LD50 values) were carried out in mice and rats. Chronic toxicity, reproductive and mutagenicity studies were evaluated in rats, mice, rabbits and dogs. Cytovirin oral liquid overdosing was tolerated in rats and mice, upto 30 and 60 ml/kg respectively resulting in no fatality,or any signs of toxicity over 14 days following its administration by gavage. The study also confirmed that the tested material lakes any detectable toxic effects even on repeated administration in mice, rats, rabbits and dogs for 3 months. Additionally, the study confirmed that cytovirin oral liquid had no evidences of impaired fertility, teratogenic and mutagenic potentials or carcinogenic activity at higher doses upto several times the recommended maximum human doses.
